Genesis is a huge book! With 50 total chapters, this book covers the span of about 2400 years (according to bible.org). Genesis is an essential book to read in studying the Bible, because it lays out the fundamental “beginnings” of creation, the sinfulness of man, and God’s plan for redemption through the Israeli bloodline. If you are working through my year long study, this is only week 3. Genesis would be difficult to read in one week! Reading this book in about one month is a lot more realistic. Here is an outline you could follow according to the Torah portions (there are 12, so I split each of the in half) most usually followed in Jewish study.
After each reading, summarize in your own words! That will help you better understand what you have read. It will also help you be better able to communicate the message of that section to others. Think of some questions that you would like to answer and journal about it. OR use those questions in a study group or with a friend (or husband!) I have exampled the first day for you.
Day 1: Bereshith – Genesis 1:1-3:24
Here are the headings for today’s reading (HCSB): The Creation, Man and Woman in the Garden, The Temptation and the Fall, Sin’s Consequences.
In this reading, God creates everything, the heavens, the earth and all that is in it, the sun, moon and stars, and man. He creates a garden in Eden and sets Man (“Adam”) there to tend to it. He also gets to name the animals and walk with the Lord. But, Adam could find no compliment among all of God’s created beings, so God put him to sleep, took one of his ribs, and made a woman, “Eve”.
In the garden, there were two special trees: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the tree of life. Both Adam and Eve knew that they would die if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, so they didn’t. . . until. . . the serpent tricked Eve into eating from the tree, and she shared with Adam, and he ate. This is often called “The Fall” because Adam and Eve, once clothed in light and walking closely with the Lord, fell to the place of feeling shame and nakedness. Their disobedience brought a curse upon them and also the serpent. But, this curse included a promise: though the seed of the serpent will strike the heel of the seed of the woman, the seed of the woman will strike his head and prevail.
- What does this account reveal to us about the character of God? (He is relational, He is creative, He rested on the seventh day, so we should too, He is gracious, He is just, etc. . . )
- What did God put in the garden after Adam and Eve were cast out? Why is this significant?
